William Bailey Travel Reviews the Toledo Zoo

Posted on 12.08.15

William Bailey Travel Reviews the Toledo ZooTimes have changed. It’s hard enough to get the kids outside to play and away from the gaming consoles even on beautiful warm sunshiny days. When winter arrives, this often seems like a near impossible feat. After all, it is difficult enough for us to get on all of our winter gear, let alone dressing them as well. Thankfully, great activities and destinations offer us all a reason to brave the element and the Toledo Zoo is just one of many of the best. Ranked as one of the US’ top zoos, the Toledo Zoo is the perfect place to get out there and play with the whole family. William Bailey Travel invites you to take a closer look at this popular destination and what makes it so special.

Opened over a hundred years ago in 1900, the Toledo Zoo started out small. The roots of this zoo come from a donation to the city for a woodchuck that was originally thought to be a bear cub. From these small and somewhat strange beginnings, the Toledo Zoo has grown by leaps and bounds garnering them a much earned position as one of the top and most visited zoos in the US.

The Toledo Zoo is open year round and they have found the perfect way to get you and your family out and enjoying the weather even when Mother Nature is doing her best to keep you in. Their annual event called The Lights before Christmas, takes place from the middle of November until the last day of the year. They dress all the exhibits, buildings and trees with Christmas lights. There are over a million Christmas lights that twinkle and sparkle. They also have more than 200 ice carvings which are created by local artists, as well as plenty of food, and carolers that sing with yuletide joy.

For later in the winter season, they offer Winter Weekends. This event takes place every weekend in January and February. All of their indoor exhibits are opened to avoid the ultra-chilly temperatures that Ohio can sometimes bring and zoo admission is half off. They have ice sculptures as well as ice carving demonstrations. Nothing will fascinate your child more than a block of ice and a chainsaw. They also offer musical and theater performances.

This is the perfect destination for you and the family to get out and avoid the winter blahs. It will get a glow in all of your cheeks, and have you enjoying family time, outside, even if you are all under layers of sweaters, coats, gloves and scarves.
