It has been a remarkable season for hurricanes already. Extremely active, this year the Atlantic Region has already seen 11 named storms including tropical storms and hurricanes. These totals are what we would expect from an entire hurricane season in normal years, making it important for you as a traveler to know how to prepare and find the information you need to stay informed.

Tips On Traveling During Hurricane Season From Bill Bailey Travel Club

If you choose to travel to hurricane prone region such as the North Atlantic, you may choose to vacation at a lower risk destination, one that falls outside of the traditional hurricane belt. In the North Atlantic, those islands less hurricane prone include:

  • Aruba
  • Bonaire
  • Curacao
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Panama
  • Azores

Choose a resort that offers a hurricane guarantee. Many resorts offer you the opportunity to reschedule your stay at no additional cost in case of a hurricane occurring during your scheduled vacation. Check the fine print before choosing your resort.

Travel Insurance may also be a viable choice if you are traveling during hurricane season. Insurance including coverage in case of canceled or delayed flights can save you hundreds of dollars if by chance a hurricane or tropical storm changes your plans.

Be sure you have packed a first aid kit containing first aid supplies, bottled water, a radio, flashlight and extra batteries.

Check with your hotel about hurricane safety procedures

With such an active season, and with millions still continuing to travel in the region, it is important to know how to prepare in case a hurricane or tropical storm impacts your vacation.

If a hurricane alert is issued, contact the local embassy to report your location.
