It is easy as a traveler to simply choose a destination of interest based on the sheer number of reviews you may find on the internet. The problem with this type of vacation planning is that often times, the best destinations are overlooked. An obvious example of this are our lesser known national parks.
Offering unique or under-appreciated places to visit is part of what makes Bill Bailey Travel Club unique. Rather than simply choosing the most well known, take time to delve a bit deeper into your vacation planning with a trip to some of America’s lesser known destinations.
Big Bend National Park – Texas
Big Ben National Park is often referred to as “a land of strong beauty” and according to the National Park Service, more like 3 parks in one. This national park provides an experience which allows you to explore not only the deserts of Texas but also mountains and the river valleys.
Seemingly unknown in the grand scheme of National Parks, the Big Bend National Park offers not only the stunning beauty for which our National Parks are known, but also vast stretches of wilderness and solitude.
Open year round, there are rarely lines to enter and it offers concessions, lodging and guided tours as well as a visitor center for you to explore. Popular activities in the park included guided hikes or self guided hikes, drives, back-country camping, river floats on the Rio Grande, biking, birding and climbing.
Lassen Volcanic National Park – California
If you enjoyed the beauty of Yellowstone but not the lines, than Lassen Volcanic National Park is a great option. Stunningly beautiful and offering many similar geologic features, visitors to this lesser known National Park have many unique opportunities to explore.
Although open every day of the year, many of the roads in the higher elevations are closed in winter due to heavy snowfall, a similar problem in many of the National Parks featuring high mountain ranges. Common sights and activities of interest in the Lassen Volcanic National Park include:
- 150 miles of hiking trails
- Scenic drives
- Camping
- Wilderness Camping
- Guided tours
- Visitor Center
- Programs
- Hydrothermal features
National Park of American Samoa
Difficult to access and far different from almost every other National Park, the National Park of American Samoa is one of the park service newest additions. Due to it’s location, this national park will more than likely never host the millions of visitors a year that one finds at the larger and more well known parks.
Non-the-less, the National Park of American Samoa will inspire and amaze you with it’s diversity and stunning natural features. Rustic to say the least, National Park of American Samoa is more than just a national park, but a cultural experience unto itself. Common sites of interest include snorkeling at Ofu Beach, exploring Samoan culture, rainforest or beach hikes or camping.
